Objectives

  • To understand the rules of punctuation marks
  • To know how to use punctuation semantically and pragmatically
  • To know a range of strategies for teaching punctuation

Good punctuation is of crucial importance in children’s writing as its use enables fluency and control. This brand new course will explore the whole range of punctuation that children are expected to use, from full stops to colons. The 'rules' of all of the punctuation marks will be outlined and participants will leave with an increased knowledge of how the punctuation system works. A range of creative approaches to teaching this area will be outlined, including the linking of punctuation to sentence structures. A major focus will be the area of semantics and pragmatics and understanding how writers can use punctuation for effect.
