BEC Teacher Training

As one of the first organisations to pilot School Centred Initial Teacher Training, we have been training teachers in Essex for 28 years. Passionate about teacher development, we know every trainee is an individual and we aim to give you an inspiring and personalised training experience that will provide a strong foundation for your future career. Our focus is on you, and we offer a flexible approach and a wide range of full and part-time courses to meet individual needs.

Our friendly and highly qualified team offers a rigorous and ambitious programme so our trainees progress rapidly and are well-prepared for their first year of teaching. When you train with us, we’ll give you a thorough grounding in the educational theory that underpins classroom practice through our series of face-to-face lectures and seminars covering topics as diverse as child development, cognitive science and behaviour management. Our general training is supplemented by an extensive programme of subject specific lectures and workshops so you can be fully confident in delivering the curriculum. All our lectures are delivered by expert professionals and give you plenty of opportunities to ask questions and to work with other trainees to develop your expertise.

Alongside the centre-based lectures, we’ll arrange your practical teaching experience in one of over 50 excellent partner schools in Essex and ensure that you have a skilled mentor by your side to help you every step of the way. From the beginning of your placement, you will have the opportunity to observe experienced teachers.  As the first term progresses, you will gradually build up the number of hours you plan and deliver yourself and by the end of the course you will be planning and teaching close to a full timetable, taking full responsibility for your classes. In the Spring term, we’ll give the opportunity to experience a contrasting school in your second placement and we’ll also arrange a series of visits to other educational settings to broaden your experience.

As well as Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), which enables you to teach in schools in the UK, we also give you the opportunity to earn the highly regarded Post Graduate Certificate in Education. With the support and guidance of academics accredited by the University of Suffolk, you complete two assignments at Masters Level, one on Special Educational Needs and one where you complete action research on an aspect of education that really interests you.

Our school centred programme is designed to meet the needs of the modern classroom and to produce highly skilled and confident teachers who are ready to make the most of their new career. Immersed in school life from day one, guided by our central training team and given fantastic support by our school mentors, all our trainees get jobs, mostly in local schools, with many following an accelerated career path.
