Newsletter - Issue 7: Summer 1 (May 2023)
Welcome
Welcome to the Summer 1 edition of the Saffron TS Hub newsletter.
We’re nearly there but not quite; SATs have happened, GCSEs and Sixth Form exams are underway but there is plenty still to do. 2022-23 continues to be a challenging year for schools, teachers, leaders and headteachers. Having said that, one of the genuine privileges for me as the Director of Saffron TS Hub is working with ECTs, mentors and colleagues who are so passionate about teaching. It is wonderful to work with teachers who bring so much to the profession and to see the ‘lightbulb’ moments in their pupils.
This edition of the newsletter contains essential information to help you start preparing for the year ahead, along with details of a wealth of CPD opportunities, including those provided by our partners and by the Curriculum Hubs in our area. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me or the Saffron TS Hub team. In the meantime, I hope you have a lovely Whitsun half-term.
Doug Brechin, Director, Saffron Teaching School Hub

Important information about registration of new ECTs and their mentors
The DfE are currently finalising improvements to school guidance (hosted on GOV.UK) around registration of new ECTs and mentors starting in September 2023.
DfE Registration will open on 3rd July
This may seem late to some of you but DfE tells us that the vast majority of schools commonly register in July. This date will allow DfE to run a pilot registration in June which will help identify any significant issues with registration processes before every school is asked to use the service. It will certainly be helpful to all of us if the system is thoroughly tested.
What you can do ahead of July:
As soon as we have more information about the DfE Registration process, we will update our website as well as informing schools directly.

Saffron Early Career Programme
The implementation of a programme based on the Early Career Framework (ECF) has been a huge undertaking for schools. As with anything new, there have been challenges and we thank everyone for their positivity.
We are approaching the end of the programme for some of our participants and we would like to take the opportunity to congratulate them on completing the course, thank them for their dedication and wish them well in their career going forward. At this point, it is worth taking a step back and reminding ourselves of the intent behind this initiative:
Teachers are the foundation of the education system – there are no great schools without great teachers. Teachers deserve high quality support throughout their careers, particularly in those first years of teaching when the learning curve is steepest. Just as with other esteemed professions like medicine and law, teachers in the first years of their career require high quality, structured support in order to begin the journey towards becoming an expert. During induction, it is essential that early career teachers are able to develop the knowledge, practices and working habits that set them up for a fulfilling and successful career in teaching. (Early Career Framework, p3)
We fully intend to keep in touch with all of our participants and hope they know that we continue to be here to support them.
The Early Career Training Programme has an impact on all of us in schools. Read this article to hear about the experiences of a headteacher, an Induction Tutor, a mentor, an ECT and a facilitator.
You may be aware of the recent Ofsted Inspection of the Early Career Professional Development Programme of our chosen Lead Provider, Education Development Trust (EDT). Saffron Teaching School Hub is a Delivery Partner for this programme and although we were not chosen by Ofsted to be part of the inspection process, you may be interested in the outcome. The report has now been published and we are pleased to announce a ‘Good’ rating was achieved by EDT.

Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (SKTM) – starting May 2023
With the pressures of timetabling and the need to deploy staff flexibly, many secondary schools find that they have teachers teaching outside their specialism. This can mean teachers from a range of subject backgrounds teaching in maths departments, tackling complex topics, and having to plan lessons with unfamiliar content.
If you want to give teachers in your maths department the opportunity to hone their subject knowledge and classroom practice, this programme is ideal.
