Supporting Confident Music Teaching

Across the Greater Essex Music Hub, we provide Continuing Professional Development for all educational settings and their teachers. We offer networking and training for education professionals and music specialists and work in partnership with schools to fulfil the aims of the National Plan for Music - see Essex Music Service Education Essex online for details of our courses.
New for this year, we have designed a CPD programme to support secondary early career teachers and those looking to strengthen their music teaching practice. The aim is to provide an opportunity for teachers to build confidence, deepen subject knowledge and connect with others working in music education. The Supporting Confident Music Teaching programme began with a full-day in-person training day on Friday 14 November at Saffron Walden County High School. This focused on discussing creating a positive learning environment, planning for progression, and developing key skills at KS3 to support success at KS4. The day was led by Caroline Law, Director of Music at Saffron Walden County High School, with Sally Thomson, Secondary Schools Curriculum Officer for Essex Music Service. Saffron Walden County High School is one of the Lead Schools for the Greater Essex Music Hub. The day provided lots of opportunities for discussion and allowed teachers the opportunity to gain personal advice and support for their setting.
Following this initial training day, participants will have the opportunity to take part in three online twilight sessions across the year, offering continued guidance on curriculum planning, inclusive teaching strategies, and assessment. The programme concludes with the Greater Essex Music Hub: Schools’ Music Curriculum Conference in July 2026.
Schools' Music Curriculum Conference - 9 July 2026
The Greater Essex Music Hub: Schools’ Music Curriculum Conference is also open to all teachers served by Essex, Southend and Thurrock Music Services. There will be keynote speakers and designated SEND, primary and secondary sessions. Delegates can choose from a selection of different sessions throughout the day, including workshops on composing, singing and music technology.
