Venn Essex Maths Hub
The Maths Hubs programme is Department for Education funded and led by the NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics). We bring together mathematics education professionals in a collaborative national network of 40 Hubs each locally led by an outstanding school or college, to develop and spread excellent practice, for the benefit of all pupils and students.
The Venn Essex Maths Hub's aim is to ensure that all pupils, teachers and leaders have access to support, training, and innovation that will improve the enjoyment and achievement of mathematics, from Early Years through to the post 16 sector.
The Venn Essex Maths Hub is led by St Thomas More’s Catholic Primary School, an outstanding primary school in the heart of Colchester. With a dedicated team of operational partners who help carry out the Hub’s work, we work very closely with our Strategic Partners, who help plan and evaluate our work. We work with successful, established mathematics communities across the Essex region as well as national partners and mathematics associations.
Saffron Teaching School Hub areas covered:
- The Venn Essex Maths Hub covers the Essex area including Braintree, Chelmsford, Epping Forest and Uttlesford.
- Schools in Harlow are covered by the Matrix Maths Hub.

Current Work Groups and Projects |
Teaching for Mastery - Primary and SecondarySupport is provided from a local classroom-based Mastery Specialist who leads the small work groups (two teachers from each school). This model of professional development involves hands-on learning and peer-to-peer support. It is evidence-based and designed to support substantial long-term change. Pupils will show a positive attitude towards maths and enjoy learning the subject. Teachers will develop Teaching for Mastery approaches within their own classroom. Mastering Number programmeMastering Number - EYFS & KS1 - this programme focuses on the key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes and progression through KS1. Participating schools will receive central training (online and face-to-face) and a wealth of pupil-facing resources. This programme will start in the Autumn Term - you can apply now. Mastering Number - KS2 - this is a national programme. This programme provides knowledge of multiplication and division and its application forms the single most important aspect of the KS2 curriculum and is the gateway to success at secondary school. Applications for this programme are not yet open - we are currently taking expressions of interest. |
