Support for Secondary Schools

Following the success of English Hub primary school support, the DfE has expanded the programme to secondary schools. This new phase focuses on supporting students in KS3 who are working below the national reading standard, ensuring they quickly gain the literacy skills needed to thrive in secondary education.

From September 2026, secondary schools will be able to access additional support through the expansion of the English Hubs programme. This initiative forms part of the Department for Education’s ongoing commitment to improving outcomes for pupils who struggle with reading.

The extended offer will help secondary schools strengthen their literacy provision and ensure that pupils who need extra support can develop the reading skills required to succeed across the curriculum.

The aims of the secondary programme are:

  • To support secondary schools to take a whole school approach to reading
  • To support secondary schools to improve outcomes for pupils with reading needs
  • To increase knowledge on supporting reading in secondary schools

Participating schools will receive:

  • An audit offering guidance and support around reading provision for vulnerable readers.
  • Financial support to fund resources or training identified as a need during the audit.
  • Potential Intensive Support through Literacy Specialist days
  • Access to training and free CPD
